One of the core messages in the book is the importance of finding balance in life. Sunim offers practical advice on how to do so, while also touching on topics such as letting go of attachment, dealing with difficult emotions, and finding joy in the simple things in life. Generally, the book challenges our fast-paced modern lives, arguing that inner peace and happiness require slowing down and being present in the moment. By quieting our minds and appreciating the little things, we can see the beauty and richness of the world around us.
More specifically, I learned from the book that slowing down allows us to see the following:
1. Our Inner Selves: By quieting our minds and reducing distractions, we gain access to our inner thoughts, emotions, and desires. This introspection allows us to understand ourselves better and make wiser decisions aligned with our values.
2. Happiness, not success: When we slow down, we realize the need to first choose happiness. Chasing success, as noble as it appears, is never-ending. Whenever we chase success, we’re using an arbitrary benchmark that was handed to us by someone else. If we achieve it, what next? We jump on the next goal to chase on the horizon. Happiness, on the other hand, is a goal we define ourselves. You alone can decide what makes you truly happy.
3. The Beauty of the Present Moment: When we slow down, we become more aware of our surroundings and can appreciate the beauty and wonder of the present moment. Simple things like the rustling of leaves, the chirping of birds, or the warmth of the sun on our skin become sources of joy and wonder.
4. The Needs of Others: Slowing down helps us become more attuned to the needs of others. We can notice their subtle cues and expressions, develop deeper connections, and offer more meaningful support and care.
5. The Unseen Connections: When we take time to reflect and connect with our inner world, we begin to see the unseen connections that bind us to others and to the universe as a whole. This fosters a sense of belonging, compassion, and gratitude for the interconnectedness of all things. “When your mind rests, the world also rests,” Sunim says.
6. Our True Potential: By releasing ourselves from the pressures of constant achievement and external validation, we can tap into our true potential and discover our unique talents and gifts. Slowing down allows us to explore our passions, pursue our dreams, and live a life of purpose and fulfillment.
7. The Need for Change: As we slow down and observe our lives with greater clarity, we may become aware of areas that are not working or that need improvement. This awareness can catalyze positive change and personal growth.
8. The Power of Gratitude: When we slow down and appreciate the small things, we cultivate a sense of gratitude for all that life has to offer. This gratitude leads to increased happiness, contentment, and a deeper appreciation for the present moment.
9. The importance of Detachment: Letting go of attachment and embracing impermanence can help us find peace and reduce suffering. No matter how we love something or someone, we should make a mental note that that thing, person or experience might not remain with us forever. Life happens, and we realize this only when we slow down.
10. We are all Ordinary: “No matter how famous or beautiful one is, no matter how much money or power one has, no matter how many wonderful accomplishments one has had, we all have our share of setbacks, heartbreak, and loss.” We have to face challenges we have no control over. Don’t think so highly of yourself, slow down. “Everyone is on the same treacherous journey of life’s tainted glory.”
